You’ve probably heard the classic line from Jim Rohn that you’re the “average of the five people you spend the most time with.”

It’s simply the law of averages, and when it comes to business, an inalienable truth. That’s why you see tight knit groups of entrepreneurs that all rise to success together and support each other through thick and thin.

The benefit of surrounding yourself with other high achievers is clear. Clearly you get support and insights from other smart cookies, but you also have people you can share your wins with in a safe place. Most of all, you have people who will call you out when you’ve punched a one-way ticket to crazytown.

So, what happens if the people you spend the most time with happen to be cute but oh-so irrational toddlers? Or a teenager that you spend driving around town?

As much as I love my family and my husband has a brain I truly love, I don’t include them in my 5 people. Because otherwise, things would be rather bleak here at NiceOps.

Making Sure You Work the Average in Your Favor

Your dream team of 5 may be friends, your business bestie or someone else entirely. But to ensure that you’re the best you can be, you want to make sure that these are people who understand you and what you’re doing.

I like to think of my dream team as wise counsellors, allies and friends as we go through the bumps and bruises of building something truly remarkable.

Which is why if you find yourself surrounded by people who think you work at the Apple Store because you have a MacBook pro, they’re not your dream team. You don’t need to ditch them or stage a friend phase out, but you do need to find your tribe lickety split!

It may be in a paid mastermind, through a business group, or even asking people you know/like/trust who they connect with. Many an introduction through a mutual friend has been the beginning of a powerful and productive relationship in my business.

When You’ve Outgrown Your Dream Team

I think it’s worth noting too that your dream team will go through seasons, and you need to watch for when it’s time to up your game. If you’re always the smartest person in your group, the one that everyone relies on and you’re outearning everyone in the group by a country mile, you need to find some people to challenge you.

Because do you want to be the average of people who are earning $50k a year when your goal is $300k?

Your dream team is only serving you if you’re pushing yourself and being forced to bring your A game. It’s better to be the one who’s stretching to be in a group instead of the one that’s clearly the alpha all the time.

Totally scary, I know, but you have limited time, so pick your dream team wisely.

So when you sit down and think ahead to the months to come, do you have the right dream team? Do you need a new 5 people to hang out with and grow your biz?
